Faces of Martial Arts Launches!

What is the FOMA project?

The Faces of Martial Arts (FOMA) project consists of a compilation of short stories, interviews, dialogues, and photographs contributing to the formation of an ongoing look—into the lives of martial artist around the world. Selected anecdotes will later comprise the formation of a book and documentary series. The project aims to shed light/ignite a conversation exploring a diverse set of cross cultural themes, told through the lens of martial artists. Some stories challenge preconceptions of Martial Arts and Martial Artists, others echo the many benefits and positive outcomes of this kind of lifestyle, beyond the scopes imagined.

Examples of themes:

  • Defining a martial artist—historical insights, perspectives, and identity
  • Black girls, Black Belts—the paths, the challenges, identity
  • Tale of 2 Dojo’s—how similar and different martial art experiences are around the world. An inside look at martial arts programs in different countries with similar colonial histories.
